Marine RNA Viruses Could Play a Key Role in Fighting Global Warming

Ocean waters are home to a huge array of RNA virus species, and incredibly, some of them may in fact help store carbon on the ocean floor. This surprising discovery was made by American scientists from Ohio State University who published their findings in the journal Science. The researchers conducted an in-depth analysis of no less than 5,500 marine RNA virus species. By closely observing their genes and functions in the ocean ecosystem, the authors of the work found that these tiny particles could contribute to the absorption of carbon from the atmosphere and its long-term storage on the ocean floor. According to the researchers, these viruses “could tune toward a more digestible carbon, which allows the system to grow, produce bigger and bigger cells, and sink. And if it sinks, we gain another few hundred or a thousand years from the worst effects of climate change," says scientist Matthew Sullivan, who led the study. The authors of the work developed computational tec...

Russian Forces Blow Up Bridge Over Ukrainian River, Cut Escape Route

Kyiv: Russian forces have blown up a bridge linking the embattled Ukrainian city of Severodonetsk to another city across the river, cutting off a possible evacuation route for civilians, local officials said on Sunday. Severodonetsk has become the epicenter of the battle for control over Ukraine's eastern Donbas region. Parts of the city have been pulverized in some of the bloodiest fighting since the Kremlin unleashed its invasion on Feb. 24. "The key tactical goal of the occupiers has not changed: they are pressing in Severodonetsk, severe fighting is ongoing there - literally for every meter," Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in his nightly video address, adding that Russia's military was trying to deploy reserve forces to the Donbas. Zelensky said the image of a 12-year-old injured in a Russian strike was now the enduring worldwide face of Russia. "These very facts will underscore the way in which Russia is seen by the world," he...

Venus crossed the sun’s face 10 years ago. It happens again in 2117

For many of us, the past two years have delivered a lesson in not taking things for granted. The chaos of the pandemic disrupted relationships, trade and the privileges we often enjoy without a second thought.  As a resolute chaser of celestial spectacles, I’ve spent my career traveling to witness some of the greatest sights in the sky. Indeed, I’ve been fortunate enough to check off practically every entry on the astronomical bucket list thanks to the convenience of the global travel network. Only when it ground to a halt in 2020 did I fully realize how lucky I’ve been.  Now, the opportunities are returning once more, but some events are just too rare. That’s why 10 years ago, with no concept of a global lockdown in my mind, I embarked on a 16,000-mile (26,000 kilometers) round trip to witness something that would never again occur in my lifetime: a transit of Venus. It was not only the ability to travel that made this experience possible, but also the astonishing pred...
